Talbot
William Henry Fox Talbot invented the Calotype in 1839 (introduced in 1841).  It was the first two step negative-positive photography that dominated over 150 years of photography.

Daguerre
Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre invented the Daguerreotype with help from the preliminary research of business partner, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce.  This image is captured on a highly polished sheet of silver-plated copper. "Boulevard du Temple, Paris" circa 1838 is also the first known image with a person in it.
